Staff Review: Packing for Mars
Packing for Mars
The irrepressible Mary Roach does it again, bringing her special brand of wit and inexhaustible research to bear on the fascinating world of space travel and its concomitant developments.
The poindexters, astronauts and real-world guinea pigs, for NASA and their like, who test drive the more innocuous technologies in the comfort of their own homes (and I do use the word ‘comfort’ advisedly); Roach interviews them all with warmth and a genuine curiosity that results in some amazing revelations.
From crash-tests to mental health/psychology assessments and beyond (zero gravity eating, ‘toileting’ and sex are also covered, cos who doesn’t want to know about that, am I right?), Roach makes an already fascinating subject even more so.

I’ve always regretted not being talented enough to play 92 games of football for Brazil like Pelé. But I
can process a stock order like nobody’s business. Seriously.
